Uveitis screening in children with arthritis

The following information provides a guide for GPs on Uveitis screening in children with arthritis.

  • Low Risk Pathology

    If possible, provide details on

    • How many joints affected in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: oligoarticular (up to 4 joints) or polyarticular (more than 4 joints)?
    • antinuclear antibody results
    • age at onset of arthritis
    • photophobia
    • corneal clouding
    • visual acuity
    • pupil shape
    • red reflex

     

    If visual acuity normal for age:
    non-urgent e-referral to general local children’s eye clinic for uveitis screening – usually this referral is made by the consultant paediatrician / paediatric rheumatologist

Referral information

Always include:

  • Child’s date of birth
  • Address
  • Child’s social worker details (including Borough), if any
  • Parent/carer contact phone number and email
